How It Works

The Science & Procedure

Neuro Sympathetic RESET (NSR) is a 20-minute outpatient procedure that has been shown to be highly effective in the treatment of anxiety, depression, PTSD/PTSI, hormone imbalance, menopause, and several other conditions associated with a dysfunctional sympathetic nervous system.

Introduction to the Procedure

Neuro Sympathetic RESET (NSR) is a procedure innovated from a 100-year-old treatment called a Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB), which was originally used to relieve physical pain in the head, neck, chest, or arm. The stellate ganglion is a bundle of nerves located on each side of a person’s neck.  This concentration of nerves is a part of the sympathetic nervous system, which regulates your body's stress response, commonly known as fight, flight, or freeze. Recent research increasingly shows the stellate ganglion plays a vital role in regulating our brain’s processing of emotions, particularly fear and anxiety.

In conditions like PTSD (PTSI), anxiety, and depression, the sympathetic nervous system is often overactive. Picture a stereo stuck at maximum volume; when turned on (triggered), it jumps straight to the highest setting. Research shows that administering medication near the stellate ganglion can help RESET this overactivity—similar to rebooting a computer to restore its proper functioning, returning the nervous system response to a pre-trauma state. For many, this RESET leads to a decrease in symptoms such as anxiety, hyperarousal, irritability, intrusive thoughts, depression, insomnia, and more. (Note: We are continuously discovering additional benefits.)

What To Expect

Before the Procedure

Before the procedure we will review your medical history and any medications you're currently taking. It's essential to inform us of any allergies or if you're on blood thinners. Adjustments to your medication or additional precautions may be taken based on each individual patient’s needs.

During the Procedure

We will clean the injection site and apply a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. The injection itself should be relatively painless, and you may feel warmth or numbness in your neck or arm afterward. The procedure is performed with ultrasound to guide the precise placement of the medication, helping to provide the safest and most effective outcome.

After the Procedure

Following the injection, you may temporarily experience weakness or numbness in your arm, drooping of the eyelid on the side of the procedure, raspy or hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing, and a possible release of exaggerated emotions. These symptoms are expected to indicate the medicine was placed in the correct area.  The symptoms should subside within a few hours.

Potential Risks and Complications

While complications are rare, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks such as bleeding, infection, or nerve damage. We take every precaution to minimize these risks––your well-being is our primary concern.

Follow-Up

Shortly after treatment, we will reach out to see how you are doing and discuss your results.  Our Patient Engagement Team will be there to support you, including follow-up calls, ongoing assessments, and overall support to ensure your success throughout your journey.

Conclusion

In summary, a Neuro Sympathetic RESET (NSR) procedure can offer relief from symptoms associated with PTSD / PTSI, anxiety and depression to several other conditions directly or indirectly impacted by the sympathetic nervous system’s fight, flight, or freeze response.

What if?

WHAT IF the scars of trauma in our lived experiences could be relieved through a 20-minute outpatient medical innovation?
WHAT IF Post Traumatic Stress is an INJURY to our sympathetic nervous systems, rather than a mental disorder?
WHAT IF a second chance at life were real, allowing us to move through the world and connect deeply with everyone and everything around us?

Truth is, PTSD is not a mental disorder. It's an INJURY.

Post-Traumatic Stress is an INJURY (PTSI) to the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) which triggers the amygdala and can directly impact  every homeostatic system in the body.

RESET’S NSR treatment releases the “fight, flight or freeze” responses – often stuck “on” – to allow restoration to the pre-trauma state, allowing for release, revival, renewal, RESET of the sympathetic nerve.  NSR is a pathway to healing from the scars of trauma and stress.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the NSR procedure work?

People exposed to chronic stressors or significant trauma often form unhealthy connections in the brain, which contribute to anxiety, depression, or PTSD. The sympathetic nervous system—our “fight or flight” response—often overreacts and contributes to these unhealthy connections. Our procedure, termed the “neuro-sympathetic reset,” temporarily blocks a part of our sympathetic system. This block can help to facilitate healing and allow a functional “reset” of our nervous system back to baseline. This allows the brain to form healthy connections, restores the body's natural balance, and improves symptoms.

Do I need a referral to have the NSR treatment?

No referral is needed; just complete our free online mental health assessment.

Do I need to stop or hold any medications before the NSR procedure?

Certain medications, including blood thinners and specific supplements, may need to be paused as they can increase the risk of bleeding. Our medical staff will review this with you before the procedure, and we will consult with your doctor to obtain permission to hold these medications if necessary.

How is the NSR procedure tolerated?

The procedure is quick and generally well-tolerated. A local anesthetic (lidocaine) is used to numb the skin beforehand. You will need to lie flat on your back for about 15 minutes. Most patients report minimal discomfort and only experience temporary side effects.

What type of medicine is used for the NSR procedure?

We use a long-acting anesthetic called Ropivacaine to block the cervical sympathetic nerves. Similar to lidocaine or Novocaine, Ropivacaine is a numbing agent commonly used for various types of anesthesia. Ropivacaine typically lasts about 8-12 hours. While the block is temporary, its benefits can last for months or even years, promoting healthy neural connections in your brain.

Are there any restrictions after the NSR procedure?

You will need a driver to and from the procedure, as driving is restricted on the day of the procedure. We recommend taking it easy on the day of the procedure as well. Everyone responds differently, but many take a nap after the procedure. The following day, you can resume your usual activity without restriction.

Is the NSR procedure FDA-approved?

The cervical sympathetic block, also known as the 'stellate block,' has been used for over 100 years to treat pain and is FDA-approved for specific pain conditions such as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). While using it for other conditions like mental health issues, long COVID symptoms, or non-pain conditions is considered off-label, numerous studies have demonstrated significant benefits, particularly for anxiety disorders such as PTSD. With an increasing number of studies supporting its efficacy for various non-pain conditions each year, we aim to be at the forefront of mental health treatment in this country. We offer this procedure as a safe and effective adjunct to conventional treatments for these other conditions.

What are the side effects or risks of the NSR procedure?

As with any procedure, risks and benefits are involved, though the risks are minimal. Expected effects after the procedure include local or regional numbness in the neck or arm, nasal congestion, drooping eyelid (Horner’s syndrome), and hoarseness. Those effects are temporary for 8-12 hours until the anesthetic wears off. The site may be sore after the procedure, and we may recommend using ice or Tylenol for relief. We use ultrasound to precisely target the area to ensure the best outcome with the lowest risk. Severe complications such as bleeding, infection, nerve injury, or seizures are exceedingly rare.

What is the evidence that NSR will work for me?

Each patient experiences the procedure differently, with varying effects. Many patients have seen remarkable symptom relief lasting from months to years. Evidence indicates that those with moderate to severe conditions, particularly anxiety and PTSD, benefit the most. Additionally, this procedure has shown promising benefits for treating depression, ADHD, long COVID symptoms, and menopausal hot flashes. A comprehensive list of resources and evidence can be found on our News and Resources page.

Will I need more than one NSR treatment?

Based on your case, treatment and results may vary. Some patients for specific conditions need only a single treatment. Other cases, mainly those such as first responders who are continually exposed to ongoing trauma, may require additional treatments. That is why we offer a discount to all our military veterans, first responders, teachers, and their immediate family members.

Do I need to have someone drive me to get the NSR procedure?

Yes, you will need a driver on the day of your procedure.

Do you have references for counseling services or other ongoing treatments if I need them?

Yes, we can provide a list of providers in the area.

I heard that 20% of people do not have a Stellate ganglion. Will that mean a block won’t work for me?

A ganglion is a bundle of nerves functioning like a relay station within the nervous system. Numerous ganglia exist throughout the body, with the stellate ganglion being one of several in the neck. In approximately 80% of individuals, two smaller ganglia merge to create the larger stellate ganglion. In the remaining 20%, these ganglia remain separate but are only slightly apart. A conventional stellate ganglion block specifically targets the most common locations of the stellate ganglion around the lower cervical spine. Due to the volume of fluid typically injected, the medication can disseminate to neighboring areas, treating all anatomical variants. Moreover, our modified method, the NSR, which targets both C4 and C6, encompasses an even more comprehensive section along the sympathetic chain, ensuring complete blockage of the sympathetic system. Research shows that employing ultrasound while broadening the target area enhances the procedure's safety and effectiveness. Consequently, regardless of your anatomical variant, our NSR treatment yields consistent outcomes.
