How It Works

What are Trigger Points?

Trigger points are taut, tender “knots” in muscles that are very sensitive to touch. They frequently occur in the neck and upper back but can develop in any muscle. Trigger points often cause referred pain in other areas of the body, such as tension headaches. They can arise from structural issues (like disc herniation, scoliosis, or prior surgeries) or reversible factors (such as overexertion, poor posture, or chronic stress). Trigger points are commonly linked to chronic health conditions, including myofascial pain syndrome, chronic headaches, and fibromyalgia.

No referral is needed, and we welcome walk-in appointments. A trigger point injection may be helpful if other treatments, such as over-the-counter pain medication, heat therapy, massage therapy, or physical therapy, have been ineffective. Trigger point injections are often most beneficial when combined with these other treatments.

What to Expect

The procedure is quick, lasting 5-10 minutes, and is generally very well-tolerated. The physician will first discuss your areas of pain and examine the relevant muscle groups. Depending on the trigger point location, you may be seated or lying down on an exam table. The area will be cleaned with alcohol, and the identified muscle will be held and injected. Sometimes, a series of rhythmic needling is performed while the medication is injected. You may feel your muscle spasm or twitch. The physician will then address other affected muscles as needed until all the trigger points are “released.” After the procedure, you can drive yourself home.

Side Effects

Trigger point injections are very low risk. While infection or bleeding can occur, side effects are generally minimal. Common side effects include localized soreness or bruising at the injection site.

What if?

WHAT IF the scars of trauma in our lived experiences could be relieved through a 20-minute outpatient medical innovation?
WHAT IF Post Traumatic Stress is an INJURY to our sympathetic nervous systems, rather than a mental disorder?
WHAT IF a second chance at life were real, allowing us to move through the world and connect deeply with everyone and everything around us?

Truth is, PTSD is not a mental disorder. It's an INJURY.

Post-Traumatic Stress is an INJURY (PTSI) to the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) which triggers the amygdala and can directly impact  every homeostatic system in the body.

RESET’S NSR treatment releases the “fight, flight or freeze” responses – often stuck “on” – to allow restoration to the pre-trauma state, allowing for release, revival, renewal, RESET of the sympathetic nerve.  NSR is a pathway to healing from the scars of trauma and stress.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to get Trigger Point Therapy?

No referral is necessary, and we even accept walk-in appointments. You can also schedule an appointment online.

Are there any restrictions before or after my Trigger Point Therapy?

There are no restrictions. You do not need a driver, and medications do NOT need to be held.

How does a Trigger Point injection work?

Trigger points are tight, tender “knots” of muscle commonly found in the neck and upper back. They are sometimes related to stress, poor posture, or overuse injury. Trigger point injections work by injecting anesthetic directly into the affected muscles, allowing the muscle to release and improving blood flow to the area.

What should I expect on the day of my Trigger Point Therapy?

The procedure is quick (5-10 minutes) and tolerated well. During your visit, a brief history and examination will be completed first. The muscles requiring treatment will then be cleaned with alcohol and injected with a small amount of local anesthetic. Sometimes, rhythmic needling is done to the area while the medication is injected. The physician will then continue until all affected areas are “released.”

What are the side effects of Trigger Point therapy?

Localized or regional numbness will occur, and soreness can occur for a day or two after the numbness wears off. More significant side effects, such as excessive bleeding or infection, are rare.

How long will the Trigger Point injection last?

Results may vary, but many patients experience relief for weeks to months after treatment. Addressing underlying causes, such as tension and posture, achieves optimal results. To extend the benefits, we recommend continuing other treatments like physical or myofascial therapy, NSAIDs, and healthy exercise. If symptoms recur, the injections can be repeated periodically.
